Over the years, I've performed in many interesting places. I've played in bars, restaurants, ski lodges, wineries, breweries, schools, churches, nursing homes, farmers markets, and even prisons. I've played on street corners, park benches, sea walls, trains, subways, and hotel lobbies. I've played guitar and sang in the US, UK, Europe, and the Soviet Union. I've played to empty rooms and full ones.
Upon reflection, the gigs that stand out are not the ones that were the most successful. They were the ones that were the most interesting. For example, one show that stands out is performing with my duo partner Joe Gibbon in a parking lot in front of the Ace Hardware in Farmington, Minnesota a decade ago. We played well, had fun, and got paid, but the show was not a success based on attendance. The parking lot was empty. I never made it to Carnegie Hall, but I can say I made it to Ace Hardware.
